My Blog: Sharing my opinions, feelings, views to all who are interested. My perspective aged like a fine wine. The grapes matured and ripened; the liquid released from the fruit is crisp, clean, clear. Savor from the oak barrel that was built by an experienced crafts person.

Eddie and the Cupcake

Eddie* is a regular at our small synagogue, at three years old. He comes with his parents to various events and religious services. His attention span is still short, but he does sing along with the Rabbi and participate in the Kiddish (blessing over the wine and bread). Eddie loves the Oneg (food after a typical Friday night or Saturday morning service). We all love the food, for that matter. Eddie seems to love vanilla cupcakes, the bite sized ones.

The first time I saw him eat one, he plopped himself on the floor of the gathering space and proceeded to use his finger to eat the frosting. He was only 2. I do not remember what happened to the bottom of the cupcake. I love frosting, so I was riveted to Eddie obviously enjoying the fluffy, white, scrumptious concoction, topped with multicolored sprinkles.

Tonight Eddie and his parents attended the annual meeting of the synagogue, tag teaming watching Eddie. Being an experienced congregant, he headed to the table laden with sweets. (There were supposed to be savory snacks as well; but, there was a mix-up in communication, and they never arrived.) Eddie received the go-ahead from his father and took a mini yellow cupcake with white frosting, colorful sprinkles on top. He painstakingly took off the paper being an experienced three year old. Then he ran away from the adults and found the farthest place in the gathering space to enjoy his cupcake. I laughed out loud. Eddie reminded me of the many dogs I have had, running quickly away with a beloved bone, far away from any other living beings, lest they would want part of the treat. Eddie's calculated action was so adorable and smart.

I believe Eddie is three years old. Three year olds, no longer toddlers, are innocent, but are quickly learning about their world. Three year olds are able to play with adults and beside children, listen attentively (within reason), curious, and ready and eager to learn. Three year olds definitely have preferences.

Most importantly, this three year old knows that a cupcake is to be savored, away from prying eyes, adult standards of etiquette, and, heaven forbid, someone snatching it away. Three year olds are not so wise that, after they devour the cupcake, they dash back to the snack table and select a chocolate chip cookie. Oblivious to nutrition and healthy food, three year olds think if it is tasty, why not eat more? Alas, Dad is watching and says, "Eddie, you had enough."
