President Biden's decision, wise and patriotic, leaves me wondering why the country did not focus on Trump's age, physical condition, and inability to express himself.
At some point in the last few weeks, it became clear that Biden had reached a point of exhaustion and was no longer a viable candidate. Or perhaps it was aging. Whatever the cause of Biden's apparent decline, the time for a younger candidate was overdue. This morning, before Biden's announcement at 1:45 EDT, I saw a couple of photos of Trump. Who would ever think not to talk about his age? When caught off guard, he looks every bit of 78 years and more. But such is the media--take one discreet idea, fact, or person's behavior and run with it. I reiterate that I would take a slowed down Mr. Biden over Mr. Trump. That said, I am happy we can move forward to stop the dangerous duo of Trump and Vance with a more vibrant team.
Vance scares me. Look at his eyes and his piercing look. Forget the nice suit, haircut, and stylish beard. Just as I felt after reading Hillbilly Elegy, which was disgusted, his roomate from Yale expressed a similar opinion. At some point, after Trump won in 2016, Vance switched sides. As in his novel, in which he described his early life of poverty and instability and then turned against the people who raised him, he utilized a similar strategy after Trump won in 2016. He should not fool anyone at this point. Vance practiced law for one year and then became a venture capitalist. Forever wanting to fit in, he decided to join the new ultra conservative elite. With Donald Trump Junior's approval and financial support from Peter Thiel, a wealthy Californian who supports conservative causes ,Vance catapulted to Senator of Ohio without any experience.
Like his presidential running mate, he has accomplished next to nothing for the poor Ohioans (or residents of Appalachia) who lost jobs when the steel and coal industries declined in the United States. Opiod addiction remains a serious problem. Vance is decidedly nativist and isolationist. He said he doesn't care about Ukraine. What sensible American would condone a brutal invasion of a smaller nation by a country interested in overruning Europe and governed by a dictator? Obviously, both men are far more interested in power than working for the people, contrary to what they say.
So I sigh in absolute relief at Biden's decision. Now we can use the energy to work for all of the candidates who truly want to help others. Now, we can form a strong force to save our Democracy from people who want to abrogate our rights.
